Ordering Caustic Soda for Vessels at Omani Ports

By admin on Nov 6th 2026

Ships calling at Omani ports sometimes need caustic soda at short notice, for boiler treatment, tank cleaning or galley degreasing. Getting a dangerous good to the ship on time needs some planning. This guide covers what to tell your supplier and agent, and how to make delivery go smoothly.

What to have ready before ordering

  • Vessel name, IMO number and port, with the expected time of arrival and berth if known.
  • Quantity in 25 kg bags or tonnes. Order slightly above minimum to cover the voyage plus a reserve.
  • Local agent's contact for gate passes and delivery coordination.
  • Billing details: owner or manager, company name and VAT details if applicable.

Paperwork for a dangerous good

  • Solid caustic soda is UN 1823, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II.
  • Ask for the safety data sheet and certificate of analysis to go with the delivery.
  • Bags should carry the corrosive label and UN number.
  • The vessel should have space in a suitable chemical store, away from acids.

Timing deliveries

Port gate passes and vehicle access often take more time than the supply itself. Confirm with your agent which documents the port needs for a dangerous goods delivery, and order early enough to cover them. Deliveries of palletised bags are easiest when a crane or forklift is available alongside.

Checking on receipt

  1. Count bags against the delivery note.
  2. Check bags are intact, dry and labelled.
  3. Match the batch number on the bags to the certificate.
  4. Stow securely in the chemical locker before sailing.
